Srinagar: What may add to the burden of common people in the Valley, government is planning to increase prices of mutton in the retail market soon. A senior official wishing anonymity told KNO that prices of mutton are likely to be increased from existing Rs 420 per kilogram to Rs 440 per kg.
The government had recently increased prices of chicken by Rs 30 making it cost Rs 150 per kg. He said the meeting between mutton dealers association and officials of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) is being held on Saturday.
“However, the final decision on the price hike will be taken in a meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner who heads the price fixation committee,” the official said. Meanwhile, CAPD on Friday notified the rate list for vegetables to be sold across the Valley.
Director CAPD, Muhammad Qasim Wani said price hike of vegetables triggered by frequent haltage of trucks will come down once local production kick-starts in next few days. “We are hoping that prices will stabilise once local production starts in next 10-15 days. The highway closure has come as major hurdle for smooth supplies of goods to the Valley,” Wani told KNO.
Even though authorities have recently issued orders to ensure strict market checking across Valley, prices of essential commodities during holy month of Ramadhan have been increasing sharply mostly due to stoppage of trucks for days on Jammu-Srinagar national highway which has hit delivery of supplies.
A visit to several markets in the uptown and Downtown areas of the city reveals how prices which are much above that the notified government rate list are varying in different markets, while many shopkeepers and vendors indulge into overpricing.
Prices of chicken have risen the most in last few days especially due to haltage of trucks on Jammu-Srinagar national highway and the two-day ban on movement of civilian traffic on the highway which has caused shortage of supplies.
The adverse effect of highway blockade is clear on the prices of eatables in the retail market. While chicken is being sold at the popular Sanat Nagar market at Rs 160 per kilogram, prices for chicken varies in other uptown Srinagar markets. At Bagh-e-Mehtab colony market chicken is being sold at Rs 165 per kg. However, price for chicken at Jawahar Nagar market is Rs 150 per kg.(KNO)
