Aerial firing in Pulwama after cop mistook tyre explosion as militant attack

Srinagar: Panic gripped Pulwama Town on Monday afternoon after a policeman resorted to heavy aerial firing as he mistook tyre explosion as grenade blast by militants, witnesses said here.

Eyewitnesses told news agency GNS that bustling Pulwama Town came to a grinding halt a cop, who has not been identified yet, fired indiscriminately as a tyre explosion occurred at Murran Chowk. The cop, according to sources, said he thought there was a grenade attack by militants and ‘that’s why he opened fire in air’.

The firing created panic among commuters, pedestrians, shopkeepers and shoppers in the Town who were seen running towards safer places. However as the things became clear after some minutes, the youths started protests against police and resorted to stone-pelting, ensuing clashes between the two sides.

As the clashes ensued, shopkeepers downed their shutters and the Town wore a deserted look. Police responded by firing teargas shells and peppers. During the clashes, six persons including three cops sustained injuries. The situation was tense in the area when reports last came in. (GNS)
