BSF man killed as India, Pak trade gunfire in Kupwara

Srinagar: A Border Security Force (BSF) man was killed while another was injured as India and Pakistan troopers trade heavy gunfire at two different places along along the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Official sources told GNS that a BSF personnel Nitin Koli of 156 bn received serious injuries at Boriwalla Post in Machhil sector during massive shelling by Pakistan late last night. The injured trooper was immediately evacuated to nearby military hospital for treatment. However, the trooper succumbed to injuries hours after being admitted in the hospital.

“At Keran, Pakistani army targeted several posts of BSF and army including Ustad Post. In the incident a BSF man Jagjeet Singh of 21 bn suffered injuries and has been hopitalised”, they said.

They said that two women Shaheena and Hameeda also received minor splinter injuries during the cross border shelling in the area.

“Both armies exchanged heavy gunfire throughout the day. The firing also damaged several forward posts on both the sides and many residential houses were also damaged at Keran,” they said, adding that the situation in the area is ‘explosive’.

An army soldier Mandeep Singh of 17 Sikh Regiment was killed yesterday allegedly in an attack by Border Action Team (BAT) of Pakistan at an army post (Killo Post) at Banjerwali in Macchil sector.

On Friday, army had said that one of its soldiers was killed and mutilated by militants “under the firing cover of Pakistan army posts” at Machil sector of Kupwara. The last rites of the soldier was held today here in Chinar Corps Headquarters.

Meanwhile, a police official told news agency GNS that no militant body has been handed over to it by the army so far as is the procedure. (GNS)
