Civilian shot dead after cop opens fire in south Kashmir

Srinagar: One more civilian has died while the another is battling for life at SKIMS after a security guard of Additional District Magistrate Ramban Babu Ram fired upon protesters in Letapora area of south Kashmir.

The slain youth has been identified as Farooq Ahmed Kuchay, while the other youth Suhail Ahmed Wani has been critically injured. Wani has been referred to SKIMS.

Eyewitnesses said that the vehicle of the ADM Babu Ram was stopped by protesters who had laid barricades on the Srinagar-Jammu highway at Letapora when the incident occurred.

However, sources say that Police had already informed Ram that it wasn’t safe to move ahead, but he had allegedly defied the police warning.

Talking to Press Trust of Kashmir (PTK), Babu Ram said that they were plying on the road in his vehicle. “Large number of people assembled. Upon seeing my PSO someone fired at us. My PSO received a bullet in his leg. He is injured. My PSO retaliated,” he said.

Ram also ruled out that police had warned them not to move ahead as it was not safe. (PTK)
