Srinagar: The 62nd day of ongoing civil uprising in Kashmir was marked with protest rallies and clashes amid shutdown and restrictions in which several protesters were injured.
The areas falling under five police station areas of Old City including MR Gunj, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Safa Kadal and Nowhatta continue to reel under restrictions. Hundreds of forces personnel were deployed in all these areas and they had erected barbed wires at several bridges and junctions. The forces personnel were also deployed in other sensitive areas of the city including Maisuma and Habba Kadal.
All the shops, business establishments, educational institutes and petrol pumps were closed in Srinagar and public transport was also off the roads. But heavy rush of private vehicles was seen in uptown and civil lines areas. In the evening, when shops opened according to Hurriyat programme, the scenes of traffic jam were also witnessed in civil lines.
In south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, scores of persons were injured when police and forces attempted to foil the pro-freedom rally at Batnoor-Lassipora. Reports said that the clashes erupted at Prichal, Lassipora, Tahab, Tantraypora and Harmulla. Police fired dozens of teargas shells, pellets but protesters retaliated by restoring to heavy stone-pelting. The locals alleged that government forces resorted to ransacking of houses and beat up inmates at these places.
In Tral, nearly four persons were injured when forces conducted a raid at Dadsara to arrest youths accused of stone-throwing. The locals however foiled the forces attempt by resorting stone-pelting, resulting in clashes in the area. Police responded by firing teargas shells. Reports said that a youth was arrested by police in the area.
The clashes also erupted at Kellar area of Shopian district in which seventeen persons were injured. Reports said that forces resorted to pellet firing and teargas shelling on protesters. One injured was shifted to Srinagar for treatment while others were treated in local hospital. The clashes also erupted at Ramnagri in Shopian.
The clashes between youths and government forces were also reported from Nasrullahpora and Panzan areas of central Kashmir’s Budgam district. The clashes in these erupted following a pro-freedom rally. In Palpora area of Srinagar, a major pro-freedom rally was held by locals. The stone-pelting clashes erupted between locals and forces at Hillar area of Kokernag in Anantnag district. According to reports, the clashes between forces also erupted at Hajin in Bandipora area of north Kashmir and protests were held by locals at Ajas against arrest of a man.
A police official when contacted said that the situation across Kashmir on Thursday. “There were isolated incidents of stone-pelting in few areas and rest was normal,” he said. (GNS)
