Death of twin babies at Ahamadiya Hospital, police registers case

Srinagar: Dramatic scenes were witnessed at Ahamadiya Hospital in Nowgam Srinagar after a woman, whose ultrasound reports had shown she was pregnant with live twins, gave birth to dead ones, prompting her family to protest at the hospital.

The family members accused the Doctor of negligence and blamed her for the death for the twins.

“My wife Yasmeena Jan was treated by the Doctor (name withheld) at Ahamadiya Hospital for past four months. A few days back the same doctor conducted an Ultrasound confirming two live babies in the womb. We admitted her to the hospital on Monday afternoon. The doctor said a surgery would be required because the babies cannot be delivered normally. She after conducting the surgery not only congratulated us but also asked us to get baby clothes. To our utter shock, we found the twins dead and surprisingly the said doctor had fled from the hospital,” Iftikar Hussain Ashraf, a resident of Lal Bazar told news agency CNS.

He said that a medical team headed by Chief Medical Officer Srinagar arrived in the hospital and assured us that time bound inquiry will be conducted into the incident. “This did not satisfy us and we filed a formal case against the said doctor at police station Nowgam. We wanted to know how the babies died and why doctor fled from the hospital without informing us about the outcome of the operation,” the family members said.

Confirming that a case has been registered against the ‘erring’ doctor, the Investigating Officer of the case Mr Ghulam Hasan said that investigation has been taken up and if proven guilty the doctor will be arrested.

Officials from Ahamdiya Hospital said they have instituted an inquiry committee to look into the case. “The responsibility lies with the doctor not with the hospital,” said the official.

Despite repeated attempts the Doctor in question could not be contacted. (CNS)
