Srinagar: Opposition National Conference legislator from Kangan, and Finance Minister sparred in Lower House Tuesday, after the former said that locals have been denied jobs in construction of Z-Morh Tunnel.
The issue cropped up during Zero Hour when Altaf said that locals of Kangan have been ignored in jobs in construction of the tunnel, “despite an agreement with the company and the government”.
While replying to the senior NC legislator, Drabu said that allegations of “ignoring and discrimination” are often being repeated in the state.
Drabu was yet to complete the reply, when the legislator interrupted him.
“Why won’t we say so,” Altaf retorted. However, Drabu replied that “What are you saying?”
The two legislators got involved in verbal duel, with Congress MLAs joining Altaf to shout at the minister.
Immediately, NC and Congress MLAs stood from their Benches and a din erupted in the House.
Congress Legislative party leader and MLA Leh, Nawang Rigzin Jora said that as opposition their job is to criticise the govenrment.
Feeling cornered, the minister sat down, while the din continued by the opposition.
Minister for Social Welfare Sajjad Lone told the opposition to allow the minister to reply.
“You are our senior members. This is what we won’t learn from you. There is a difference between shouting and parliamentary language,” Lone told them.
To this, NC MLA from Khanyar, Ali Muhammad Sagar said “don’t overreact.”
Altaf reacted angrily to Finance Minister. “I have been cabinet minister four times. I have many powerful people than you. You don’t know me.”
However, the opposition got infuriated and walked out of the House. (KNS)
