Govt bans entry of polythene into JK

Srinagar: Government Friday banned transport of polythene into the state and its use in tourist places.

Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment, Lal Singh said in the floor of the Lower House in legislature that polythene will not be allowed into the state at Lakhanpur Toll station.

“From today, polythene transport and entry into the state is banned,” Singh said.

He said that the use of polythene at tourist places also stays banned.

“We cannot allow our state’s environment to be engulfed by the polythene menace,” the minister said.

The issue of polythene ban was raised by BJP MLA from Ramnagar, R S Pathanai, who had put a resolution in the House to ban use of polythene in the state.

Pathania was supported by Congress MLA G M Saroori, and other members. However, independent MLA from Udhampur Pawan Gupta opposed the ban on polythene, but said that state should adopt a conventional policy for disposal and recycling of polythene. (KNS)
