Rifle snatching: Police detain BJP leader, quiz his daughter-in-law

Srinagar: Police today detained Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader whose Personal Security Officer (PSO) decamped with a service rifle by suspected in Central Kashmir’s Chadoora area of Budgam district.

Official sources told news agency GNS that the police in Panzan village of Chadoora also questioned his daughter-in-law.

They said that the cops detained the BJP leader Ghulam Mohammad Chopan at Gori Mohalla in connection with decamping of the rifle of his PSO Bashir Ahmad Hanjura (belt no: 283/security) yesterday. According to sources, the police also questioned his daughter-in-law.

“The daughter-in-law of the BJP leader told the police investigators that the PSO was not at their house when some militants barged into their house. She told police that the gunmen barged into their house at around 9:25 am and the PSO who lives nearby came at 9:30 am,” said the sources.

“She further said that when the PSO entered the house he didn’t identify the militants and he (the PSO) was taken by her in a room without revealing anything. Subsequently, she told the police that she gave the rifle and magazines to militants which was in a armourer trunk,” the sources said.

Official sources further told GNS that the daughter-in-law of the BJP leader was also stopped by her from coming downstairs. “She said that she wanted to prevent any confrontation and causalities,” the sources said, adding: “she has been let off now.”

Pertinently, police registered a case under FIR No. 74/2016 u/s 7/25 I A Act 392 RPC. The police have also constituted a Special Investigation Team to expedite the probe. (GNS)
