Sajad Lone’s aide shot dead in Handwara

Srinagar: Suspected militants shot dead an activist of Peoples Conference in north Kashmir on Wednesday evening, official sources told news agency GNS.

They said that three gunmen barged inside the house of Ghulam Nabi Khawaja (37), an activist of PC headed by cabinet minister in ruling PDP-BJP government.

Ghulam Nabi, sources said was asked to come out of his house by the gunmen.

Complying with the orders, Ghulam Nabi along with his pandit friend Moti Lal came out. The militants asked Moti Lal to stay back as they took Ghulam Nabi along, they said.

“Few meters away there were gunshots and the family along with Moti Lal rushed to the spot and found Ghulam Nabi in a pool of blood. They immediately took him to nearby hospital from where he was referred to Srinagar hospital for specialized treatment”.

Ghulam Nabi, sources said has multiple bullet injuries on his head, chest and knees.

Later, a senior police officer while confirming the incident told GNS that Khawaja succumbed to injuries on way to hospital.

Ghulam Nabi is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. “One of his daughters is married while his two sons are studying,” local sources said.

Meanwhile, police reached to the spot and have launched a man hunt to nab the assailants.

The attack comes on a day when Sajad Lone met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

Ghulam Nabi, a class-1V employee in state’s education department, was said to be close aide of Sajad Lone.
